BSI Business Information has revised and renamed its best practice publication for design engineering BS 8888:2004 Technical Product Specification.
It contains a wealth of information including 151 normative and informative references, (of which 55 are new references), that outline key criteria for best practice design work.
Particularly it cross-references the new BS ISO 1101 that takes into account of 20 years of Geometrical Product Specification (GPS) development.
Using BS 8888 encourages a common system, a common language and a common understanding.
It will help designers to order their output of design so that a product concept will be realised through the manufacturing process, no matter where located, in a way that avoids ambiguity or misunderstanding.
BS 8888 will ensure that technical designers, specifiers and quality managers have access to a single point of reference, use best practice techniques, speak the same language when specifying and graphically representing products, are precise in their application by leaving no room for misinterpretation, help the smooth transfer of design concept to manufacturing process, shorten product development time, increase speed to market.
The use of BS 8888 allows organisations to benefit from cost- and time-savings during and after the transfer of design concept to product realisation.
Some large buyers and users of technical product design, such as the MoD, have already stipulated the use of BS 8888 as part of their Requests for Information (RFI) and Requests for Tenders (RFT).
