This technology has particular appeal in automotive andpersonal stereo applications where efficiency, low batteryconsumption, small size and low cost are important.
The switchingprocess adds fast rising edges at the switching frequency to theaudio output signal.
These fast edges are of no consequence tothe typical load, a loudspeaker, but present a difficult signalfor measurement instruments.
The end result is that noise anddistortion measurements of switching amplifiers with almost anyanalyser without preconditioning will yield inaccurate andunpredictable results.
The solution is to precondition the signalbefore presentation to the analyser by using a low pass filter.The fast edges will then be 'softened' while theprimary audio signal will be passed intact.
A well-designedpassive filter will not compromise the audio signal passingthrough it by adding noise or distortion as an active filtermight.
The AUX-0025 is a dual-channel, multipole LRC passivefilter that provides the necessary attenuation of out-of-bandsignals and reduces the steepness of the fast switching edges.
Asall Audio Precision analysers provide two input channels, theAUX-0025 is a two-channel device.
The input connectors replicatethe input connectors found on analyser inputs (XLR female andbanana jacks).
The output connectors are XLR male.
As loadingcapacitance is an issue, two short XLR male to XLR female cablesare included to facilitate connection to the analyser.
Forconvenience, these cables/connectors are colour-coded.
Thefrequency response of the filter is +/-0.05dB from 10Hz to 20kHzwith insertion loss typically 0.05dB.
High-frequency rejection isgreater than 50dB from 250kHz to 20MHz.
Distortion is less than110dB harmonic, measured at 70V peak-to-peak at 1kHz, or lessthan 100dB intermediate at 70V peak-to-peak with 18 and 20kHzdual test-tone signal (intermediate distortion components are at2, 16 and 22kHz).
The AUX-0025 costs GBP 655.00 (plus VAT).
