The EX4210R, new from TTi (Thurlby Thandar Instruments), is a high-current single-output bench power supply capable of currents up to 10A at voltages up to 42V

The choice of 42V enables the unit to be used as a test source for the new generation of automotive electrical parts which will use 42V (18-cell batteries) instead of 14V (six-cell batteries) to reduce currents and hence wiring losses. The 420W output power capability is achieved despite the highly compact case style, which has dimensions of only 140 x 160 x 195mm.

Weight is just 3.6kg.

To match its high current capability, the power supply incorporates remote sense terminals, which can eliminate the effects of connection lead resistance.

Sensing can be selected as remote or local by a front-panel switch.

The EX4210R uses mixed-mode regulation technology which combines switch-mode preregulation with linear postregulation.

Special techniques are used to maintain very high efficiency whilst achieving noise levels that are close to that of a pure linear regulator.

Line and load regulation are both better than 0.01% and output noise is less than 2mV, even at full power.

High-resolution controls allow accurate setting of voltage and current levels.

The EX4210R incorporates separate four-digit voltage and current meters giving a resolution of 10mV and 10mA.

The meters use bright 14mm LED displays, and have an update rate of four per second to provide near-instantaneous response.

The unit has been designed to meet the stringent requirements of relevant IEC standards for safety and EMC.

The output is intrinsically short-circuit proof, and is protected against external voltages and reverse currents.

Low heat output ensures that no part of the PSU suffers excessive temperature rise.

The EX4210R costs GBP 395 (plus VAT) in the UK, and is available from both TTi and its distributors.
