BASF has opened a new clean room laboratory in Ludwigshafen for the development of new process chemicals for the semiconductor industry and customer support in application technology in this market

BASF has invested about GBP 5 million in the new clean room lab and has created 14 modern workplaces. 'With the new clean room lab, we are now able to develop new products together with our partners to meet the chemical and material challenges for future semiconductor technologies', said Dr Dieter Mayer, Project Manager and Head of Development for Semiconductor Materials Europe.

'With the laboratory in Ludwigshafen, we are optimal integrated into the research and development Verbund with an easy and fast access to all BASF's chemical expertise'.

'We will achieve further synergies with our long time experience in semiconductor application techniques'.

BASF is one of the world largest manufacturers of electronic chemicals up to the highest purity standards, which are used in various processes of semiconductor production.

'The application laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art wet process tools and thus we will be able to quickly develop customised solutions for our customers to help them improve their processes', said Dr Andreas Kuhner head of Technical Marketing Europe.

BASF is a leading supplier of electronic chemicals for the rapidly growing semiconductor industry and for the production of flat screens.

In August 2006 BASF started construction of a new integrated production plant for process chemicals for the semiconductor industry.

The Electronic Material Centre Europe is scheduled to open at the end of 2007 and will create 60 jobs in Ludwigshafen.

Ludwigshafen is BASF's largest production site.

The 10km2 site is also the company's headquarters and home to its central research platform.

Between 2005 and 2009, BASF plans to invest about Eur 6 billion in Ludwigshafen for capital expenditures, modernisation and maintenance of its plants as well as an additional Eur 800 million per year in the research and development of modern processes and innovative products.
