Artesyn Technologies has announced its first digital point-of-load (POL) convertor. The DPL20C is a nonisolated POL convertor in the new family of PMBus-compliant DC/DC convertors. Sampling of the product along with evaluation boards to the first beta customers has now begun; general availability and production will commence on completion of beta trials, expected within the next 45 days.
The PMBus open-standard digital power management protocol is supported by the special interest group (SIG) known as the System Management Interface Forum, charged with further developing, enabling and promoting the PMBus power operating system.
Earlier in the year the PMBus protocol was endorsed by both of the industry's major power supply alliances, the Point-of-Load Alliance (POLA) and Distributed-power Open Standards Alliance (DOSA).
Although the protocol is in the public domain, there are already more than a dozen power supply and semiconductor companies that have formally adopted the protocol and continue to collaborate on further development and promotion of the specification.
The DPL20C is a 20A output convertor which features an extensive set of digital configuration, monitoring and diagnostic facilities accessible via the PMBus interface.
The convertor stores all configuration and setup data in nonvolatile memory, and powers up with these preprogrammed default settings, thus eliminating the need for external power controllers.

POL convertors boost current density
High-current-density point-of-load convertors promise dramatic savings in board real estate and external component costs
Intended for computing, storage and networking applications, the DPL20C is rated for forced air environments with ambient operating temperatures of 0 to +70C seen in the latest 1U high rack mounting equipment.
Functionality includes the following: a wide input range from 4.5 to 13.8V; programmable output voltage from 0.6 to 5.5V; programmable sequencing, tracking and margining; real-time monitoring of voltage, current and temperature, with automatic warning of fault conditions; the ability to source/sink 20A of load current, along with differential remote sensing; a library of 45 executable PMBus commands; and a Windows-based GUI supporting a variety of PC interfaces.
The DPL20C is the first PMBus-compliant DC/DC convertor to be announced by the industry.
