Microchip's new fan managers are the industry's first single and dual SMBus fan speed controllers featuring fan-fault and overtemperature detection

The TC654, TC655, TC664 and TC665 fan managers monitor rotation data and can detect when a fan wears out, allowing users to replace fans prior to malfunction. Integrating FanSense technology, the devices support fans operating at 5, 12, 24 and 48V and rated up to 1A, by using an external power device.

FanSense is Microchip's patented method of sensing when a fan pulse is present, allowing detection of fan-fault conditions and protection against fan failure.

In addition to extending fan life, the ability to adjust speed according to temperature also reduces acoustic noise.

Fan speed can be programmed either by the output of a remote thermistor or through the SMBus interface.

The TC654/5 are able to monitor two fans simultaneously, making them ideal for multifan systems, whereas the TC664/5 are targeted at single-fan applications.

The TC655 and TC665 devices also assert an over-temperature signal to identify over-heating conditions, eliminating the need for an additional temperature-detection circuitry.

Offered in 10-pin MSOP packages, the devices have an operating voltage range of 3.0 to 5.5V and a temperature range of -40 to +85C.
