mp3PRO runs on
ARCtangent-A4 32bit RISC processor
ARC International and the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits (Fraunhofer IIS) have developed a solution for the new mp3PRO standard, based on the ARCtangent-A4 32bit RISC processor
The new mp3PRO standard, developed by Coding Technologies (CT), is an update to the MP3 technology, enabling higher quality audio at low bitrates. This means digital audio devices can provide the same quality of sound but with a smaller memory overhead and lower-bandwidth Internet connection.

ARC's revenue exceeds expectations
ARC International has announced its unaudited financial results for the full year ended 31st December 2006
The new solution is based on ARC and Fraunhofer's existing implementation for MP3 and AAC decoding, which already provides designers with a small silicon footprint and code size - this is being demonstrated at the Embedded Systems Conference in San Francisco this week (Booth 4944).
A typical AAC/MP3 solution based on the ARCtangent-A4 is clocked at 25MHz and requires only 80k gates and 28Kbyte of on-chip memory.
The configurability of the ARCtangent-A4 solution allows the core size to be reduced even further to approximately 60k gates; a solution based on this processor configuration requires less than 20Kbyte of memory and a 30MHz clock.

Farzad Zarrinfar, senior vice president of marketing and business development for ARC International, said: "We are pleased to be working yet again with Fraunhofer IIS to develop a system solution for the latest standards in audio decoding.
The real value of the joint AAC/MP3 solution is that designers can effortlessly use our leading user-customisable processor and support for both codecs to build an audio SoC quickly, along with an optimised power dissipation and size.
This time-to-production value will also drive our joint development of the new mp3PRO solution".
Fraunhofer IIS is a lead developer of advanced audio coding schemes and one of Europe's leading technology and vendor independent design facilities.
Combining ARC's flexible ARCtangent-A4 32bit RISC processor and Fraunhofer's extensive experience with fixed point audio codecs, the hardware/software platform provides a key system-on-chip building block to aid rapid development of digital audio enabled embedded products like digital radio systems, portable audio players or telecommunications devices.
The mp3PRO implementation is interface compatible with the existing MP3 and AAC implementations offered by Fraunhofer for the ARCtangent-A4.
This provides developers with a simple upgrade path to the next generation of audio decoders.
As audio codec technology continues to evolve it is important for developers to be able to support both legacy and new codec solutions with minimal development effort.
