The MP1590A-30 is a high-precision jitter-analysis option for the MP1590A network performance tester

In response to the concern among communications engineers that current next generation network analysis tools cannot guarantee accurate jitter evaluation, Anritsu has introduced the MP1590A-30, a high precision jitter analysis option for its MP1590A network performance tester. The MP1590A-30 enables engineers to carry out highly accurate pattern jitter and random jitter testing, ensuring that the jitter measurements taken on SDH/Sonet, OTU-1, and OTU-2 transmission equipment, during design and manufacturing, are traceable and reliable.

In order to achieve such high levels of measurement accuracy and repeatability, Anritsu produced a +/-0.005-unit-interval traceable reference source against which it could calibrate the testers.

The MP1590A-30 delivers industry-best +/-0.02-unit-interval peak-peak accuracy in jitter measurement and also offers measurement repeatability of +/-0.005-unit-interval peak-peak, as well as exceptionally low intrinsic jitter of 0.05 unit intervals peak-peak.

The MP1590A also demonstrates excellent low optical power dependency in the range from -7 to -16dBm and virtually no jitter in the ITU-T recommended range of -10 to -12dBm.

The reference source uses a digital sampling oscilloscope to analyse the jitter of devices under test.

The MP1590A-30 verifies pattern dependent jitter by measuring the phase difference between the data falling/rising edges and the reference clock.

Random jitter of the oscilloscope's trigger circuits is measured using SSB noise measuring equipment.

An advanced DSP method is applied to the data to take account of the filter bandwidth and to synthesise the resulting jitter allowing the test time to be integrated into the result analysis.

Integration of the jitter analysis option is simple, due to the MP1590A's compact PCI card-based architecture.

The unique design allows users to configure the MP1590A to conduct performance testing from 1.5Mbit/s to 10.7Gbit/s for electrical, 1310nm optical and 1550nm optical signals.

Previously, engineers could only perform these multiple-bitrate measurements using a multiple-instrument test system.

This flexible architecture is economical because users purchase testing capability only as they need it.

Completely portable and based on standard Windows XP, the MP1590A is easy to operate, and as much as 60% smaller and 30% lighter than competing instruments.
