Custom test systems check
RF cables in a Typhoon
Anritsu's European Applied Solutions Centre has developed two complete custom test solutions to enable BAE Systems to test the high-performance RF cables on the Typhoon aircraft
The Anritsu systems, based on the company's Lightning 37000 vector network analyser and 56100A scalar network analyser are being used for goods-in test and to test the cables once they have been installed on the aircraft. The project has achieved recognition from BAE Systems by winning a Bronze Award in the Chairman's Award for Innovation.

The RF cables on Typhoon carry signals and data to the avionics, communications and similar systems.
Typical applications include radio, navigational aids, radar, identification friend or foe (IFF) systems and the defensive aids subsystem (DASS).
The systems supplied by Anritsu allow measurements to be taken in frequencies from tens of megahertz up to around 40GHz.
The cables are tested by their manufacturer as terminated assemblies, but to avoid any risk of installing a faulty cable and to check for transit damage they are also tested to a very high specification at BAE Systems' goods inward.
As there is also a risk that a cable or connector can be damaged during the installation process, it is necessary to verify that the installed performance is correct and to identify where any faults have occurred.
Therefore Anritsu has supplied two complementary test systems: the goods inward system is based on the company's Lightning 37000 vector network analyser while the production system uses a 56100A scalar network analyser.
Based on its contractual agreement with BAE Systems, Anritsu has undertaken all the design, specification, co-ordination, build and integration work, as well as managing the procurement process with the suppliers of the hundreds of specialist components that form each system.
Anritsu's EASC team worked closely with its customer at engineering level, project management and procurement, and also with the cable supplier, WL Gore.
The resulting test system is one of the first to enable BAE Systems and a cable manufacturer to work with agreed, common test methods.
Anritsu delivered the systems in the form of a complete, shock-mounted package for use in a production environment.
The systems are expandable, as the requirement evolves in the future.
