Air distribution unit
keeps racks cooler

American Power Conversion (APC) has developed a novel compact air distribution unit that gives IT, telecomms and facility managers the ability to increase airflow inside racks and enclosures. The latest generation of rack-based hardware - such as web servers, telecomms equipment, and internetworking hardware - continue to put more processing power into smaller physical packages allowing more equipment to be housed in a typical rack-enclosure.

UPS systems promise cost-effective protection
UPS family provides continuous power and hardware protection for desktop computers, removing the risk of lost data and downtime due to power outages and other transients
As a result, the power densities of rack-based equipment are increasing at an alarming rate and supplying the necessary air for cooling is quickly becoming one of the main concerns for today's data centre manager.
Traditional raised-floor distribution methods are currently unable to distribute enough airflow inside densely populated rack enclosures, where the cooling is most needed.
APC's NetworkAIR RM air distribution unit works in tandem with the existing precision air conditioning system to pull air from beneath the raised floor directly into the rack enclosure before it can mix with room air.

This dual fan unit works to eliminate dangerous hot spots by boosting the conditioned air volume within the rack itself and improves air delivery in poor static pressure areas.
In environments without raised floors, APC's NetworkAIR RM air distribution unit uses supply air from under and around the bottom of the rack or enclosure where the air is coldest.
This boosts the amount of air supplied to ensure necessary amounts of airflow to equipment.
"The equipment in the top portion of rack enclosures are failing at higher rates because heat rises and the intake air is above the manufacturer's recommended operating temperature", said Michael Adams.
"Hardware failures caused by excessive heat are a leading cause of downtime.
This product gives our customers a simple, reliable solution that can be installed in minutes".
This new unit ensures continuous availability by providing redundancy through dual blower fans and A-B power input feeds.
This rack-mounted solution prevents conditioned air from mixing with warmer room air before it reaches equipment and provides greater air volume than traditional perforated floor tiles.
Filtration of air before distribution into the enclosure provides additional protection against particulate contamination in sensitive equipment.
The APC NetworkAIR RM Series distribution unit is currently available in North America, and will carry an estimated reseller price of GBP 484.
