The ATS665LSG from Allegro MicroSystems Europe is an adaptive Hall-effect sensor assembly that offers true zero-speed operation in digital gear-tooth-sensing applications. The new device incorporates a Hall-effect sensor integrated circuit and a magnet, which together are packaged in an optimal configuration for applications such as speed sensing in automotive transmissions where sensor repeatability and timing accuracy are important. The subassembly incorporates patented self-calibration circuitry that nulls out the effects of installation air gap, ambient temperature, and magnet offsets to provide superior timing accuracy with symmetrical targets over large operating air gaps.

The self-calibration at power-up keeps the performance optimised over the life of the sensor.

The ATS665LSG has an open-collector output for direct digital interfacing with no further signal processing required.

The integrated circuit incorporates a dual-element Hall-effect sensor and signal processing circuitry that switches in response to differential magnetic signals created by a ferrous target.

The circuitry contains a sophisticated digital circuit to eliminate the detrimental effects of magnet and system offsets and to achieve true zero-speed operation.

Digital processing of the analogue signal provides zero-speed performance independent of air gap and also dynamic adaptation of device performance - including reduced vibration sensitivity - to the typical operating conditions found in automotive applications.

High-resolution peak-detecting digital/analogue convertors are used to set the switching thresholds, and hysteresis reduces the negative effects of any anomalies in the magnetic signal associated with the target.

The package measures only 8mm diameter by 5.5mm long, and so is easy to design into the most restricted locations.

Operating temperature range is -40 to +150C.
