A new series of ICs perform quadrature decoder, counter and bus interface functions, and are specifically designed to meet the stringent performance requirements of industrial automation equipment

The Agilent ICs are specified for operation from -40 to +100C, compared with -25 to +80C for competing products. True 33MHz operation provides compatibility with a greater variety of encoders operating at higher speeds, and the 32bit counter provides faster data transfer, often eliminating the need for additional system memory registers.

The primary application for the Agilent HCTL-2022 and HCTL-2032 CMOS quadrature decoder/counter ICs is to interface quadrature incremental encoders to a system's microprocessor.

Encoders measure position, direction and speed of a motor or positioner.

The new ICs also interface digital potentiometers to a data input bus in machine controllers.

They can improve the overall performance of digital closed-loop motion control systems by providing all the necessary quadrature decoder functions, reducing the time-intensive calculations in the machine controller itself.

The HCTL-2022 and HCTL-2032 incorporate quadrature decoder logic, a binary up/down state counter and an 8bit bus interface.

The use of Schmitt-triggered CMOS inputs and input noise filters ensures reliable operation in electrically noisy factory environments.

Both ICs contain a 32bit counter and provide LSTTL- (low power Schottky transistor-transistor logic) compatible tri-state output buffers for compatibility with most controller circuits.

The Agilent HCTL-2032 provides dual-axis capability (interfacing to two single-axis encoders) and index channel support, and can be programmed for 4x/2x/1x count mode (selectable resolution).

The Agilent HCTL-2022 supports a single-axis encoder and fixed 4x count mode but does not provide decoder output or cascade signals (to support external counter ICs).

The HCTL-2032 is supplied in a 32-pin PDIP (plastic dual inline package), and the HCTL-2032-SC in a 32-pin SOIC (surface-mount IC package).

The HCTL-2022 is supplied in a 20-pin PDIP.

Agilent's HCTL-2032 quadrature decoder IC is immediately available through Agilent's direct sales channel and worldwide distribution partners.

Samples of the surface-mount HCTL-2032-SC and HCTL-2022 are available, with production volumes expected in January 2004.
