A novel PowerPC CPU module simplifies system design by using flat cable connection for easy integration with user I/O and even wire-wrap prototype boards

With integration level of ICs offering the possibility to pack a complete computer on a very small PCB, the market has seen the arrival of many new proprietary form factors, such as ETX, E2Brain, DIMM-PC, EPIC, X-Board etc, each aiming to replace the venerable old PC-104 mezzanine concept. These computer on module (COM) or system on module (SOM) devices are designed to help the end user to build a own system without the burden of designing the CPU part of the project but to focus on the application specific carrier.

This is a smart approach: however most of these new products use very high density connectors which make the carrier board PCB very difficult to design.

And these COM or SOM devices are not usable in prototyping environment.

It was this that motivated Actis Computer engineers to bring to the market a new fresh concept based on a compact (but not too compact) 32bit PowerPC SBC with all the most common interfaces, memory equipment and a peripheral extension bus available through a very popular flat cable connection for easy integration with specific user I/O boards or even wire-wrap prototype boards.

This module include a AMCC/IBM PowerPC 405GPr running at 266MHz with only 1W power dissipation, 64Mbyte of SDRAM, 8Mbyte Flash, 64Kbyte SRAM with battery backup, a CompactFlash socket, a Fast Ethernet port, an RS232 serial port and a 32bit/66MHz extension on a HE10 connector.

To make this new kit even more cost effective, it can be purchased with a complete Embedded Linux software package including a BSP and a cross development environment which can run on a simple PC.

This PowerPC SBC-Kit is available from Actis Computer at price from Eur 500 (one-off) and the kit including Linux by Ecrin development tools is available for Eur 995.
